What is Schema Markup — and Why Does It Matter?
Schema markup is structured data you add to your HTML — typically as a JSON-LD script block — that tells search engines what your content means, not just what it says. When Google understands that a block of text is a FAQ, a product with a price, or a local business with opening hours, it can present that information in richer, more prominent ways directly in search results.
These enhanced listings — called rich results or rich snippets — typically earn higher click-through rates than plain blue links. A page with star ratings visible in the SERP will attract more clicks than one without, even when ranking in the same position.

The official reference for all schema types and their properties is schema.org — the vocabulary agreed on by Google, Bing, and other major search engines. Google documents which schema types it actively uses for rich results in its developer documentation at developers.google.com/search/docs/ appearance/structured-data/search-gallery.
This validator performs client-side checks against the most common types. For Google's definitive eligibility verdict, use the Rich Results Test — paste your URL or code there after fixing any issues flagged here.
