We Analyzed 200 Indian Business Websites in 2026 — Here's What We Found

We crawled 200 Indian business websites across 10 industries. Here are the real numbers on speed, SEO, mobile experience, and what most businesses get wrong.

Why We Did This Study

We talk to Indian business owners every single day. Startups in Bangalore, manufacturers in Ludhiana, clinics in Pune, restaurants in Delhi. And the same question keeps coming up: "Is my website actually good enough?"

The problem is that most business owners compare their website to what they see — competitor sites, international brands, whatever shows up on page one. But nobody has real data on where Indian business websites actually stand in 2026.

So we decided to find out ourselves.

Between January and March 2026, our team at Town Media Labs crawled and manually audited 200 Indian business websites across 10 industries. We used a combination of Screaming Frog, Google PageSpeed Insights, Ahrefs, and manual review to evaluate each site on 23 different parameters — from basic SSL certificates to advanced schema markup.

This isn't a survey. We didn't ask business owners what they think about their websites. We measured what their websites actually do.

Methodology

Here's exactly how we conducted this research:

  • Sample size: 200 business websites, 20 per industry
  • Industries covered: Retail, Healthcare, Real Estate, Restaurants, Education, Fintech, Legal, Manufacturing, Hospitality, Fitness
  • Geography: Businesses operating in Tier 1 and Tier 2 Indian cities (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Pune, Jaipur, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Kochi)
  • Business size: Revenue between INR 50 lakh and INR 50 crore annually — the "missing middle" that most studies ignore
  • Tools used: Screaming Frog SEO Spider, Google PageSpeed Insights API, Ahrefs, GTmetrix, Chrome DevTools, Schema Markup Validator, manual review
  • Period: January 8 – March 22, 2026

Every website was tested on both mobile and desktop. Every data point was recorded in a structured spreadsheet. No sampling shortcuts. No AI-generated guesses.

The Big Picture: Key Findings

Let's start with the numbers that surprised us the most.

Only 31% of the 200 Indian business websites we analyzed would pass a basic SEO health check. The rest had critical issues that are actively costing them traffic, leads, and revenue.

The Speed Problem

The average mobile page load time across all 200 sites was 4.7 seconds. For context, Google recommends under 2.5 seconds for a good user experience, and research consistently shows that 53% of mobile visitors abandon a page that takes longer than 3 seconds to load.

Only 38% of sites loaded in under 3 seconds on mobile. And the worst offenders? Real estate websites, with an average load time of 6.2 seconds — usually caused by uncompressed high-resolution property images.

The average Indian business website is 2.3x slower than what Google considers acceptable. That's not a minor issue. That's a revenue leak.

Core Web Vitals: The Harsh Reality

Core Web Vitals became a confirmed ranking factor back in 2021. Five years later, only 26% of Indian business websites pass all three metrics (LCP, INP, and CLS).

Breaking it down individually:

  • LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): 39% pass — hero images and unoptimized fonts are the biggest culprits
  • INP (Interaction to Next Paint): 44% pass — heavy JavaScript and third-party scripts drag this down
  • CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): 57% pass — ads and lazy-loaded images without dimensions cause the most shifts

The global pass rate for all three CWV metrics sits at roughly 42%. Indian business websites are 16 percentage points behind. That gap is significant when you're competing for search visibility against international businesses or well-optimized Indian competitors.

Industry-by-Industry Breakdown

Not all industries are equally behind. Some are investing heavily in their web presence. Others are still running websites that look like they were built in 2018.

Fintech Leads, Manufacturing Lags

Fintech companies were the clear winners across almost every metric. 100% had SSL (regulatory requirement), 55% passed Core Web Vitals, and 65% maintained an active blog. These companies understand that their website is their product — so they invest accordingly.

Manufacturing was at the other end. The average manufacturing website loaded in 5.4 seconds, only 10% passed Core Web Vitals, and just 15% had a blog of any kind. Many were still using Flash-era design patterns — heavy image sliders, PDF-only product catalogues, and "email us for pricing" as their sole CTA.

Healthcare: Surprising Content Gaps

Healthcare websites scored well on trust signals — 90% had SSL, 35% used schema markup (mostly MedicalOrganization schema). But only 45% had an active blog, despite healthcare being one of the highest-search-volume categories in India. Patients are searching for symptoms, treatments, and doctor reviews. Most healthcare websites aren't capturing any of that traffic.

Restaurants: Social Over Search

Restaurants had the lowest blogging rate at just 10%. But they had the highest social media activity — 95% were active on Instagram. The problem? Only 35% had proper LocalBusiness or Restaurant schema markup, which means they're missing out on rich results in Google Search and Maps. A restaurant that shows up with hours, ratings, and menu items in search results gets significantly more clicks than one that shows a plain blue link.

The 7 Biggest Mistakes Indian Business Websites Make

After analyzing all 200 sites, clear patterns emerged. These aren't obscure technical issues. They're fundamental mistakes that cost real money.

1. Ignoring Inner Page SEO

This was the single most common problem. 57% of websites had missing or duplicate meta titles on their inner pages. The homepage would be reasonably optimized, but service pages, product pages, and about pages were completely neglected. Every page on your site is a potential entry point from Google. If your service page has a meta title that says "Services | Company Name" — you're invisible for the actual service keywords.

A proper SEO strategy treats every page as a landing page. Not just the homepage.

2. Uncompressed Images

78% of the websites we analyzed were serving images in PNG or JPEG format without any compression or modern format conversion. The average page weight was 4.2 MB, with images accounting for 67% of that. Converting to WebP alone would cut most of these sites' load times by 30-40%.

We found one real estate website serving a single hero image at 8.4 MB. That's larger than some entire websites.

3. No Structured Data

Only 28% had any schema markup at all. And of those, most only had basic Organization schema — the bare minimum. Just 14% had structured data that could generate rich results (FAQ schema, Product schema, Review schema, HowTo schema).

Rich results dramatically increase click-through rates. In our experience managing SEO campaigns, pages with FAQ schema see 15-25% higher CTR than those without. It's free visibility that most Indian businesses are leaving on the table.

4. "Mobile Responsive" But Not Mobile Optimized

82% of sites were technically responsive — they adjusted to mobile screen sizes. But only 54% were truly optimized for mobile. The difference matters. "Responsive" means elements resize. "Optimized" means:

  • Tap targets are at least 48px apart
  • Font sizes are readable without zooming (minimum 16px body text)
  • Forms are easy to fill on mobile
  • CTAs are thumb-reachable
  • No horizontal scrolling on any page
  • Images are served at appropriate resolutions for mobile

With 78% of Indian internet users accessing the web primarily through mobile devices, "good enough" mobile experience isn't good enough.

5. Dead Google Business Profiles

61% of websites had some link to their Google Business Profile. But when we actually checked those profiles, only 44% were actively maintained — meaning they had posts, responded to reviews, and had updated business hours. The rest were claimed-and-forgotten, which is almost worse than not having one at all. An outdated GBP with wrong hours or no reviews signals neglect to potential customers.

6. No Content Strategy

Only 34% of businesses had an active blog (posted within the last 90 days). Of those, fewer than half were publishing content that targeted actual search queries. Most blogs were company news, festival greetings, or generic industry articles that nobody searches for.

Content without keyword research behind it is just noise. It takes the same effort to write a blog post that gets zero traffic as it does to write one that brings in 500 visitors a month. The difference is research and strategy.

7. Slow Hosting on Shared Servers

We traced the hosting of all 200 sites. 63% were on shared hosting plans — many on budget Indian hosting providers where server response times (TTFB) exceeded 800ms before the site even started loading. For comparison, a well-configured server should have a TTFB under 200ms.

Switching from budget shared hosting to a quality managed hosting provider or a CDN-backed solution typically cuts load times by 40-60%. It's one of the highest-impact, lowest-effort improvements any business can make. Indian Websites vs Global Benchmarks

How do Indian business websites compare to global averages? We compiled data from the HTTP Archive, Google's CrUX report, and Ahrefs' global datasets to build this comparison.

The gap isn't catastrophic. But it's consistent — Indian business websites trail global averages by 9-16 percentage points across virtually every metric. The biggest gaps are in meta descriptions, Core Web Vitals, and structured data — all areas where the fix is technical, not creative.

Here's the optimistic read: this gap represents opportunity. If your competitors aren't optimizing their meta descriptions, aren't using structured data, and aren't passing Core Web Vitals — then doing those things puts you ahead of 70-85% of the market. The bar is low. Clearing it gives you disproportionate advantage.

Indian business websites trail global averages by 9-16 points across every metric. But that's the opportunity — doing the basics right puts you ahead of 74% of your competition.

What the Best-Performing Websites Had in Common

We isolated the top 20% of websites in our study — the 40 sites that scored highest across all parameters. Here's what they shared:

  • Professional CMS: 85% were built on WordPress, Next.js, or a custom framework — not website builders like Wix or GoDaddy builder
  • CDN usage: 78% used Cloudflare or a similar CDN
  • Regular content: 90% published at least 2 blog posts per month
  • Technical SEO basics: 100% had proper sitemaps, robots.txt, canonical tags, and structured data
  • Analytics: 95% had Google Analytics 4 and Search Console properly configured
  • Page speed: Average load time of 2.1 seconds on mobile
  • Conversion focus: Clear CTAs on every page, contact forms that actually worked, WhatsApp integration

None of these things are expensive or complicated. They're just the result of treating a website as a business asset instead of a digital brochure that gets built once and forgotten.

Actionable Recommendations

Based on everything we found, here are the highest-impact improvements Indian businesses should prioritize — ordered by effort vs. impact.

Quick Wins (Under 1 Week)

  1. Compress and convert all images to WebP. Use Squoosh or ShortPixel. This alone can cut load times by 30-40%.
  2. Write unique meta titles and descriptions for every page. Not just the homepage — every service page, product page, and location page needs unique, keyword-rich metadata.
  3. Add basic schema markup. At minimum: Organization, LocalBusiness (if applicable), and BreadcrumbList. Use Google's Structured Data Markup Helper if you're not technical.
  4. Check and fix broken links. Run your site through Screaming Frog or a free broken link checker. Fix or redirect every 404.
  5. Update your Google Business Profile. Fresh photos, respond to every review, post weekly updates. This directly impacts local search rankings.

Medium-Term (1-3 Months)

  1. Upgrade your hosting. Move from shared hosting to managed WordPress hosting or a JAMstack setup with edge caching. Budget INR 2,000-5,000/month for hosting that actually performs.
  2. Implement a content strategy. Research what your potential customers are searching for. Publish 4-8 keyword-targeted blog posts per month. Quality over quantity, but consistency matters.
  3. Get a proper SEO audit done. Not a free automated scan — a manual audit that looks at technical SEO, content gaps, backlink profile, and competitive positioning.
  4. Optimize for mobile properly. Test every page on a real phone (not just Chrome DevTools). Fix tap targets, font sizes, form usability, and CTA placement.

Long-Term (3-6 Months)

  1. Rebuild if necessary. If your website is on an outdated platform, loads in 6+ seconds, and wasn't built with SEO in mind — patching it will cost more than rebuilding it properly. A modern, fast, SEO-optimized website pays for itself in 6-12 months through increased organic traffic and conversions.
  2. Build topical authority. Create comprehensive content clusters around your core services. A legal firm should have 20-30 pages covering different aspects of their practice areas. A healthcare clinic should have content for every treatment they offer.
  3. Invest in backlink acquisition. The top-performing sites in our study had an average of 47 referring domains. The bottom performers had 6. Quality backlinks from relevant Indian publications, directories, and industry sites still move the needle significantly.

Category A: You looked at the data and thought, "Our website has most of these problems." You're not alone. 69% of the websites we analyzed had significant issues across multiple parameters. The good news is that awareness is the first step, and most of these problems have straightforward solutions.

The data suggests that structured data, content velocity, and Core Web Vitals optimization are where the biggest opportunities lie right now. These are the areas where Indian businesses lag the most behind global standards.
