Topic Cluster & Pillar Page Outline Template
A topic cluster strategy only works if the structure is planned before writing starts. This template gives you a complete planning document for a single topic cluster: the pillar page and all the supporting content around it.
The template opens with a Cluster Overview section: the core topic, target audience, and the strategic reason for building this cluster. The Pillar Page section documents the primary keyword, secondary keywords, target URL, estimated word count, and a high-level outline of the main sections.
The Cluster Map section is the core of the template. It lists each cluster article with its target keyword, search intent, planned URL, current status (planned, briefed, in progress, live), and how it links back to the pillar. A visual diagram template shows the hub-and-spoke structure, which is useful for presenting the plan to stakeholders.
A Content Gap Analysis section compares what you have against what competitors have built for the same topic — showing which cluster pieces are missing. The final section is a publishing sequence recommendation, since publishing the pillar and all cluster content simultaneously is less effective than building the cluster over time.
Works as a standalone planning document or as an attachment to the Editorial Calendar Notion template.
